Google Voice gives you a free phone number for calling, text messaging, and voicemail. It works on smartphones and computers, and syncs across your devices so you can use the app while on the go or at home.
You’re in control
Forward calls, text messages, and voicemail to any of your devices, and get spam filtered automatically. Block numbers you don’t want to hear from.
Backed up and searchable
Calls, text messages, and voicemails are stored and backed up to make it easy for you to search your history.
Chat in groups, with photos
Send group texts and share photos instantly.
Your voicemail, transcribed
Google Voice provides free voicemail transcriptions that you can read in the app or have sent to your email.
Cheap international calling
Make international calls at competitive rates without using your mobile data.
Keep in mind:
• Google Voice is currently only available in the US
• All calls made using Google Voice for iPhone use the standard minutes from your cell phone plan
• Calls are placed through a US-based Google Voice access number, which may incur costs (e.g. when traveling internationally)

Thank god this finally exists, works well but I hold Google to an extra-high standard...
Overall the app is pretty good - lightyears better than the HTML5 experience iOS users have been forced into for a while. There are a few usability pitfalls and kinda rookie mistakes I really don't expect from Google, which make the difference between 2 stars and 4 or 5. To be clear: iOS's native experience is certainly more usable for calling and texting in the sense that it is more intuitive.
First, generating a new SMS is a bit hidden in GV.app. You have to go to the phone keypad as if you were to make a call, then push the "Text" button. This is confusing as there are two clearly analogous buttons ("Text" and "Call") that really don't have analogous uses - you dial numbers/addresses *before* pushing call, but you dial numbers/addresses *after* pushing text if your trying to SMS someone.
Second, the Inbox has a funny way of tracking if a message has been read or not. The odd part is that mid-SMS-conversation the messages from the other party, even though they are on your screen and you're clearly reading and replying, are considered "new" until you tab "back" to the Inbox. This is really odd - why exactly do I need to go to the crappy preview screen in order to mark a message as read? (rhetorical)
Overall this would be an amazing app if it (a) were from a guy programming for a few weeks out of his garage or (b) didn't have well over a year of expectation and ramp-up time for the dev's to absolutely *prefect* the experience. I still use this over 'GV Mobile +', but only just barely and I really like having both handy.
Great for iPad

Now I can throw away the GV Mobile+.
The push notification is so fast. In the past, I used textfree to receive text from Google Voice. Now, with the Google Voice app, the notification is much faster, almost instant. The moment I click send on the computer, I see it on the iPad.
*For those who complain you can't make direct call from Google Voice on iPad/iPod Touch, it is not a valid complaint since it is not what Google Voice meant to be. If you really need that, a good choice is Talkatone, which phone through Google Voice directly. Indirectly, you have Textfree, Sipgate, Whistle, which all give you free phone number to make a voice call. Textfree is the best among those, having good quality and push notification even when it is still in beta.
Can't be used on ipod touch for real free calls
Joey Key write:
When I installed this app on my ipod touch 4g , it just told me my device was not a phone and couldn't use the dial mode, it's ridiculous. Why I can use the google voice to make free calls from computer but not from ipod touch?! I mean, they use the same wi-fi connection to reach internet. This one doesn't make any sense to me!
